Location, Location, Location. Anyone who’s ever bought a home knows this phrase; it usually implies the sacrifice that’s made to get the home of your dreams in your dream location. For Woodbury residents Michael and Bridget, finding both was an exercise in patience and thinking out of the box—literally. Last year, through some creativity, the couple built the last new house in the Wedgewood neighborhood.

"What's Old is New Again," Winter 2013

Austin Home Magazine

Having lived in their Windsor Road house for 14 years, David and Kim Hood weren’t sure how much longer they would stay. They had four grown children, and the Hoods were familiar with picking up and moving on; they had lived in more than a dozen houses from 1979 to ’97.

So, in 2011, the empty nesters thought they might like to downsize from their 6,000-square-foot, 1932 Georgian-style home in the Old Enfield section of Austin and live in a more contemporary place. But the children protested—the home had become a gathering place during the holidays—and so the Hoods decided that they would bring a contemporary touch into the house instead of looking for it elsewhere. Kim called designer Martha O’Hara’s Minneapolis office.

This Tudor-style estate has it all: fine architectural details, intricate millwork, and an enviable location on Lake Minnetonka’s Gray’s Bay. One of the few things that the eventual owner will not be able to customize about this home is the view. The .62-acre lot sits on a rise that looks down over a pond and then beyond for miles to a distant wooded ridgeline in the west. Carl M. Hansen Companies carefully oriented the house so that the vista is presented through generous windows in almost every room.

"Staging Your Home to Sell," April 2013

Lavender Magazine, Kate O'Hara

One of the most stressful times in a homeowner’s life is when they decide to sell their home and move to the next big thing. The process becomes especially daunting when it comes to getting a house ready to show. This means appealing to a variety of personal tastes, ensuring that the home sells quickly and for the best possible price.

The good news is that there are a number of tips and tricks that any homeowner can implement to give a house curb appeal from the inside out.

When staging a home, the most important thing to keep in mind is this: prospective buyers have to be able to imagine themselves living in the house. From clean landscaping to neutral wall colors, the home’s design is no longer about creating a reflection of a single homeowner’s personal tastes or lifestyle. Staging is about creating a home with mass appeal – a blank slate where anyone can envision his or her family.

"Gray is the Color of the Hour for Home Interiors," April 2013

Star Tribune

“50 Shades of Grey” isn’t just the title of a racy novel. It also describes the paint chips now arrayed on countless kitchen counters as homeowners try to pick just the right smoky shade.

Gray, it turns out, is the new beige — the neutral of choice for those seeking a sophisticated, on-trend color palette.

“It’s the color of the hour,” said Kristy Conlin, an interior designer with Martha O’Hara Interiors in St. Louis Park.

The threshold to this home in Edina, Minnesota, is undeniably impressive. High-gloss ebony wood floors shimmer underfoot. Shale-colored walls instill a sense of serenity.
