Olson Defendorf Custom Homes, Builder
Katie Hastings Design, Architect
Located just minutes from Hyde Park in Austin, this five-bedroom new build by Olson Defendorf Custom Homes is a masterclass in traditional interior design layered with historic charm. Originally inspired by a 1946 bungalow on the lot, the home was thoughtfully rebuilt and repositioned to create a larger backyard while preserving the architectural character that defines Central Austin living. Through custom millwork, arched openings, inset cabinetry with cremone hardware, antique light fixtures, and 2.25-inch on-site-stained hardwood floors,
the interiors capture the warmth of an older home while delivering the function and flow required for a modern family of five (plus two beloved beagles). Every detail was considered, from privacy-conscious patio adjustments and a porch ceiling crafted from reclaimed original flooring to a hidden piano-hinged fireplace panel, Dutch door, laundry chute, and galley-style kitchen that maximizes storage. Designed collaboratively for a creative, color-forward family, the result is a soulful Austin interior design project that feels collected, personal, and perfectly at home in one of the city’s most established neighborhoods.
