A Modern Family Home in the Heart of the City

A Modern Family Home in the Heart of the City

Function and flexibility are key for today’s modern family home. If you decide to build custom, it’s important to keep the whole family in mind, to design with character that seamlessly blends into the city neighborhood, and include design details that make it your own. But like any new build or remodel project, your home won’t come together in a day. Whether furnishing to refresh or tackling a large-scale renovation, planning ahead is important to account for long lead times that are the new norm.

This modern, minimalist design provides an ideal canvas – offering the flexibility to furnish your home in a way that truly functions for your family. This home allows for everyday activities such as science projects at the kitchen counter, while also providing warm and inviting space for hosting dinner parties.

Open concept for everyday living

The main level was designed with everyday living in mind. A focal fireplace creates subtle separation, drama, and dimension while also providing a space to gather – forming a purposeful room that can flow easily from entertaining to lounging.

The neutral color palette is complemented by gold and black accents that add contrast to the otherwise light interior, grounding the design. The white oak floors and fireplace wall in a natural (clear) finish add warmth, while also keeping this home family-friendly for everyday living.

Storage for days

With toys and snacks overwhelming most homes’ available storage, this family home was designed with ample storage opportunities so a clean and modern aesthetic could continue throughout each room.  Copious built-ins, an oversized main level pantry, a lower level mudroom (laundry included), and generous bedroom closets ensure there is generous storage to manage the chaos and prevent clutter (every parent’s goal).

Details for the modern family home

Unique tile selections can add character and elevate your home’s design. In this home, we featured stunning tile in the primary bathroom and kitchen – both rooms we all tend to spend much of our time!

Light fixtures can be the jewel of your home, so it’s important to choose wisely. In this home, we chose elegant fixtures that provided functionality. Subtle gold and black accents from the lighting, hardware, and plumbing pull together a cohesive design that both compliment and contrast with the overall modern aesthetic of the home. Although it’s all aesthetically pleasing, careful selections were made to make daily chores feel much less of a burden.

We intentionally kept the design neutral with subtle accents, and furnishings that boast smooth lines with soft textiles – keeping this modern family’s home both welcoming and appropriate for a daily flurry of activities. Mid to low-backed furniture in a palette of creams and grays, and an emphasis on warm textures complement this home without overpowering the simple aesthetic. The kitchen runner is a showstopper, blasting with color, and a nod towards vintage and personal touches. Colorful accents were added throughout the lower level to breathe life into a space that receives less natural light.

This modern beauty fits seamlessly within the city and neighborhood, offering the functionality and style most families demand today. This custom build is the perfect home – whether welcoming your first child or in need of space for your growing brood.

Planning ahead for long lead times

It’s important to remember that a simple and clean design can provide the perfect backdrop for any holiday decor or design aesthetic. And after an especially hard season, hosting is top-of-mind for many. Whether looking to refresh your space for the holiday season or tackle a full-scale renovation, the demand for furnishings and home services remains high and supply and availability remain low. With furniture lead times out six to nine months, now is the time to explore and consult. It’s important to plan ahead so you are ready to host in style when the holidays arrive (because we all know summer will pass in the blink of an eye).

Hello, could you please share the shingle type and color of the Shorewood, Minnesota house.? The exterior was a faint mint kind of color. This would be a great help for the house I’m building. Thank you so much! Love everything you do!
